Wenlock CE Academy With God’s love, we are lights for the world

Omega - Miss L Nye

Omega - Summer Term

Welcome to Year 3 Omega Class. I am delighted to be a member of the Wenlock community, inspiring children to grow and flourish, in God's love, as lights for the world. Below is everything you need to know about all our fun and engaging learning that will be happening in the Summer Term.

We will be continuing on our White Rose Maths journey by building on our learning of multiplication and division. Once we are confident in our skills with this topic, we will move on to learn about length, perimeter, fractions, mass and capacity and fractions. The children love the reasoning and problem-solving element of our White Rose planning.

As we move into the Summer term, we will continue to build upon the skills that we have learnt as part of our Talk for Writing project. We will continue to study and write a range of narrative genres, using our story mapping and oral rehearsal skills to become confident in an existing text, before applying our knowledge of grammar and devices to our own independent writing. We will also work on developing our writing skills by applying them to a range of non-fiction texts.

In Science, we will begin our 'Plant Nutrition and Reproduction', where the children will focus and investigate the fuctions of the stem, roots, plant vessles and leaves. The children will be learning about a flower's life cycle, focusing on pollination, seed dispersal, and flower anatomy. The children will complete hands-on experiences in our fantastic outdoor learning environment.

This term, our main focus for History is ‘Emperors and Empires’, where the children will be learning about Ancient Rome, focusing on the ruling of Rome, the growth and expansion of the Roman Empire, the hierarchy in Ancient Rome, the Roman army and the invasion of Britian. Moreover, the children will explore Boudicca's rebellion and how the Roman's inventions and ingenuity evolved the Roman community.

In D&T we will be exploring 'Greenhouses'. This project is linked to Emperors and Empires as the Romans were the first to use greenhouses in horticulture. We will learn about the purpose, structure and design features of greenhouses, and compare the work of two significant greenhouse designers. Together we will explore techniques to strengthen structures and use tools safely and use our learning to design and construct a mini greenhouse.

In Art we will be creating 'Beautiful Botanicals'. This project is linked to Emperors and Empires. We will learn about the genre of botanical art and create weavings, two-colour prints and beautiful and detailed botanical paintings of fruit.

In Religious Education, the children will be exploring 'Why some people think life is like a journey and how people mark significant events of life'. During this unit, the children will be focusing on several religions including; Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and those with no faith.

Music will now be delivered by Mr Belgrave, a music specialist teacher. Pupils will develop and refine musical performance skills across a range of instrumental disciplines including voice, ukulele, tin whistle and violin, working towards performances through the year. They will listen and learn to play and using a range of music from different areas of the world and different cultures. They will develop their knowledge of musical styles and conventions appropriate to the instrument and learn how to improvise and compose their own music. Pupils will learn to read stave, tablature and other forms of notation. Pupils will appraise their own work and that of others, refining their use of appropriate technical vocabulary to describe what they hear.

Our PE focuses this term are 'Net/Wall games and Athletics'. During our Net/Wall games sessions we will be introduced to the technique and tactics associated with these styles of games and explore key vocabulary linked to them. Our PE skills will be developed by exploring throwing and catching, aiming and target practice through sport specific practices. During Athletics, we will be building on previously learnt athletic techniques with a focus on athletic performance. We will develop a preferred technique of throwing, jumping and running within an athletic context.

Our PSHE focus this half term will be 'Relationships' where we will explore in detail our relationships with others and ourselves. We will look at roles and responsibilities of families and move onto exploring friendships with a particular focus on conflict and resolutions. There will be a link to computing where we explore ways of keeping ourselves safe online as well as what is means to be a ‘global citizen’. We will finish the unit by celebrating our ‘web of relationships’ and being appreciative of the relationships we have.

In French we will be deepening our basic understanding of French vocabulary with a focus on numbers 1-20, days of the week, colours, time and months of the year.

Useful information

  • Our class PE days will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursday. Please ensure your child wears their named, correct school PE kit on these days, that earrings are not worn and long hair is tied up.
  • The children have access to their water bottles in the classroom during the day. Please ensure that your child has a named water bottle in school which is taken home regularly to be washed.
  • Your child is welcome to bring in a snack of fruit or vegetables each day.
  • Reading books is your child's responsibility and they will be responsible for changing their own book. Please ensure they record the date and title of the book that they have chosen in their reading record.

Weekly Home Learning (Approximately 30 minutes a day)

Each week your child will be set:

  • Daily reading
  • Daily Times Tables Rockstars
  • Spelling practice
  • Pick and Mix Grid

Spellings and Phonics:  It is expected that in Year 3, all the Year 1/2 words and Year 3/4 list of spellings are known. Please practise these and use these words in your writing. Remember to use some of our Spelling strategies!

Times Tables:  This is vitally important!! We spend the time to help the children to learn their times tables in preparation for the Year 4 multiplication check test. Keep practising - with TTRS!

Pick and Mix Grid: These grids allow pupils to choose a few activities which particularly interest them and spend the term working on them before bringing them in to share with the class.
