English Overview

Our English curriculum at Wenlock CE Academy is designed to ensure that every child develops a genuine love of reading and writing, building their confidence, imagination, and skills to become aspiring leaders.

We use the Talk for Writing principles to support our teaching of writing, with carefully chosen texts that support pupils through the three phases of our writing journey. Our reading provision combines the Ashley Booth Reading Curriculum for explicit comprehension teaching, weekly Book Talk sessions for reading for pleasure, and carefully selected class readers each half term. For pupils who need additional support, we use FFT Reading Quest intervention and HfL Fluency intervention to rapidly close gaps in phonics and reading fluency.

Vocabulary development is embedded throughout our English curriculum, with a focus on tier 2 and tier 3 vocabulary in every unit. We use Purple Mash to deliver systematic spelling teaching across all year groups, with weekly sessions and dictation activities ensuring pupils can apply their spelling knowledge in context.

Below you will find documents which outline our English curriculum in detail, including curriculum maps, progression documents, and the texts studied by each year group.
